The Board of Directors is the governing body of the organization and alternates are appointed so as to allow the board to function properly and conduct business in the absence of the board member at meetings.

Alternates are important in that they allow the board to function in the absence of a board member at meetings. Alternates are also an important source of future board members. The experience they gain through observation and participation are important preparation for these future roles.
